Social awareness is the ability to understand and respond to the needs of others.  The competencies of being socially aware are:

  • Empathy - understanding other’s emotions, needs, and concerns
  • Organizational awareness - the ability to understand the politics within an organization and how this affects the people working within the organization
  • Service - ability to understand and meet the needs of clients and customers

Social awareness lets you understand and carefully consider what people want, and plan to communicate in a way that meets that need.  Some ways to develop better social awareness:

  • Really listen, not to respond but to understand
  • Pay close attention to how others interact
  • Develop the ability to identify other’s emotional states
  • Understand your emotions and how different situations and other’s emotions make you feel
  • Think before you answer, and give clear thought out answers
